Mediocrity or less

Today I was given my “file” the compilation of reports and tests my pearents have been collecting throughout my life.
From my hospital records as an infant up until my secondary School education. After reading this small collection of data I have discovered a truth.

I am on paper below average, in most cases in the lowest third percentile.

I was honestly dumbfounded, and yet in a quick overview of my current self I have realised I have remained in the same category of “below average” in to my adulthood. It’s devistating, and yet somehow I have made myself comfortable with less then mediocrity. The question now is what do I do with this revelation?

The process of making this dress was a long and sometimes frustrating. As with all costumes I had good and bad days, overall I see it as a good experience.

This first image was taken to reflect the nose comman reference image for the dress. It does a woundrfull job of showing the detail.

I think the thing I like least about this dress is that the zipper is for more obvious hen the original dress. In the end it came down to that moment when you just need to let it go and move on.

The most frustrating part of dress construction was I fact what you didn’t see. I found making a Ivan shaped hoop was very difficult. I ended up making at least six unique versions before I found one that was adequate. I’m fact the hoop snapped during the con from been stepped on one too many times. It was huredly put back together to using some ribbon I had used to decorate the hoop.

I wore the dress to the AMC expo In Melbourne.

I came first in the Movie cosplay category. I am not ashamed to say I was ecstatic to recive the award. There where some truly amazing cosplays at the event.

Aerial Costume

image

In July I participated in the Physipole studios in house Aerial competition. It’s not cosplay as such but I drew inspiration from the costuming worn by Emilie autumn. I used the song “fight like a girl” as the track to the performance.
I ended up taking first place in the initial heats and third place in the finals. There is some thing awesome about been awarded a sash, Perhaps it’s a girl thing.

The song I used

The costume is made from scraps of lace fabrics, similar to a doily dress. The idea was to look feminine without the in convenient of a flowing costume while performing arial tricks. I also took modesty as an important consideration, you don’t want anything falling out as you spin and toss yourself around in the air!

The dress is actually a basic singlet top with a 1/2 handkerchief skirt around the back. To make the costume I simply draped and sewed fabric around the bodice aria. Overlapping the lace in sections to create a random design. I was happy with the outcome, however it did run the risk of the costume not been recognised by the judges. That been the case I lost marks for costuming as they where not aware of the reference. I have learnt to chose a more main stream theme in the future.

Torso completion Jupiter Wedding dress

jupiter wedding dress

After having a few hectic weeks of day to day life I have finally completed the torso for the jupiter wedding dress.
I found the back particularly difficult as there is a lack of photograph references available. I believe this will become more of an issue is I work my way down to the lower half. I will need to but up the speed it have this completed by my deadline.

Construction

The jupiter dress is progressing nicely.
I have the dress fully constructed, with the exception of the hem. I haven’t decided if I shall be wearing the shoes that go with the dress or not ( as walking around in heals all day sounds painful).
Here are the shoes

The dress still require ALOT of work due to the flowers and crystal placements.

Dress construction

image

I would like to point out that the fabric is beige/ light tan. The original dress IS NOT WHITE! Frankly the fact that their are so many white recreations bothers me.
Markovna Kunis has a beautiful olive completion and stark white would stand out far too much! ( don’t mind my little rant)

I am not a big fan of using pre made patterns, if I can figure out how to construct the dress without one I see that as a win.

I started of with 8M of cheep fabric and just draped, snipped and pinned until I came up with an appropriate likeness. The pattern needs further adjustments (the torso needs lengthening ), I left ALOT of fabric at the bottom as I haven’t made the hidden structure that will be supporting the dress.

image
I am (not very patently) waiting for the DVD to be released,so I can study the movement of the skirts. Hopefully helping me to ascertain what type of supports are under there. A cage crinoline is the obvious choice but I suspect the original has a more sophisticated structure.

I have decided to be less fussy over the fabric. I live in a small country town and there are only a limited amount of options. We do have a spotlight but it’s 3/4 other junk and only has a smallish fabric section. I could make a day trip down to the bustling city of Melbourne but this dress is running me enough money without the added travel. I have found this lace like fabric (it’s actually a curtain) the pattern is too large compared to the original but I think if I can get a nice sturdy underlay it will work out.

Jupiter Ascending

I am currently working on my latest cosplay.
The wedding dress from Jupiter Ascending

I have found a few people who are currently in the production process of recreating the dress some of these have been very helpful in visuals and tips.

Make up:

It is interesting to see what people focus on, some are very particular about stone placement and accuracy in fabric.
What I find interesting is the flowers, so far I haven’t come across a creation that is portraying the flowers “accurately”.
I have no intention of offending my fellow cosplayers who have undertaken this mammoth dress and used purchased flowers. ┬áHave been wanting to learn to make fabric flowers for a while and this project is a good way to give me the motivation to do so. I didn’t intend to recreate very tiny flower, but just the larger ones. Its all down to personal preference.

When I see the dress I think the flowers wade the most outstanding feature. Focussing in these will first also give some the time to source the dress fabrics and figure out what to do about those troublesome red 3D printed chips.

My grand ideas of perfect flowers faded quickly as I realised the extent of how complicated these flowers can be. They have been created by combing the work of
Katherine Wardropper And Angel Armor
These fantastic Women specialise in the art of textiles and their skills are well beyond my own.
They are hand cut with many layers and made from damask silk.
Silk alone is not cheep starting at $25 a meter. The fabric uses in the costume has silver thread woven into the fabric and is right up there in price range.
These are a sample of the costume flowers

I have experimented with various alternative fabrics but have settled on a Faux silk made from nylon. It is extremely heat sensitive and melts at the drop of a hat.i am aware that my flowers are not yet a exact replica, but this will improve with practice and time.

Billie Piper

Last year I did a Cosplay from Doctor Who 50th anniversary.

” The Moment” portrayed by Billie Piper
The character is a interface for a weapon designed by the “Time Lords”.

The costume itself is fairly simple with a rugged weatherd appearance.
The weapon itself is the more detailed and time consuming aspect to recreate.

For the dress I sourced the original designer and purchased a copy off eBay for a deal.
The vest is not the exact replica but a close approximation as the original was far beyond my price range.

Armageddon
Armageddon

The box I created over a few months.
It was my first attempt at recreating a prop, it was a interesting and somewhat frustrating process.
And I now sits proudly displayed on my shelf.

Here is a link to what the prop looks like from all sides:
